A shrub of the family Rhamnaceae, esp. any of the species of Rhamnus that are commonly called simply ‘buckthorns’; also used in a broader sense to refer to any of several small deciduous shrubs, such as the fetuca, with small oval leaves and small white or yellowish flowers, typically growing at the edges of woods or along streams.
