Nestorius Definition
Definition
A Syrian churchman and theologian who became a patriarch of Constantinople in the 5th century, whose teachings led to a major dispute in the early Church regarding the nature of Jesus Christ, particularly the debate over the titles 'Theotokos' (God-bearer) and 'Christotokos' (Christ-bearer). Nestorius is often viewed as a precursor to later heresies and schisms within Christianity.
