Irian Definition

A region in Indonesia, formerly known as Irian Jaya, which is part of the western half of the island of New Guinea. It is known for its rich biodiversity and cultural diversity. The name comes from an indigenous language and is also sometimes used as a short form for 'Irian Jaya', the name used for the region from 1963 to 2002.
