Definition

In chess, a fianchetto refers to the development of a bishop by moving the pawn in front of it two squares, then moving the bishop two squares diagonally outward (two squares horizontally and one square vertically), to the flanks. In a wider sense, it can describe any situation where a pawn is moved to the second rank and a piece is developed on the flank. The term is also sometimes used metaphorically in contexts unrelated to chess.
